P-5-P Pyridoxal 5' Phosphate
Pyridoxal 5’-Phosphate (P-5-P) is the converted and easy-to-assimilate form of vitamin B6. This phosphorylated B6metabolite is a coenzyme in more than 50 different metabolic steps, including amino acid conversions, red blood cell and neurotransmitter production, and fatty acid metabolism. This active form of vitamin B6 is particularly well-suited for individuals with amino acid imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, or to support liver function.
The B vitamins do a number of things for your body. They turn the foods you eat into fuel for energy‚ give you healthy hair and skin‚ and help you utilize fats and proteins. One of these nutrients‚ vitamin B-6‚ has the added responsibility of helping your brain produce certain neurotransmitters (chemicals) that it uses to send messages to other parts of your body. Norepinephrine and serotonin are neurotransmitters that can alter your mood‚ while melatonin helps your body’s internal clock run smoothly.
Vitamin B-6 also helps you absorb vitamin B-12. Likewise‚ it helps your body produce immune cells and red blood cells. You can get vitamin B-6 from foods like chicken‚ tuna‚ milk‚ beans‚ and brown rice. It’s fairly easy to get what you need in your diet‚ although taking certain medications can cause a mild deficiency. If you have a vitamin B-6 deficiency‚ you might develop weak muscles‚ be irritable‚ have trouble concentrating‚ and feel nervous. When your vitamin B-6 levels need a boost‚ a supplement that contains the active form of this vitamin—known as pyridoxal 5-phosphate (P-5-P)—can help.
